Total Nutrition Shakes
A lot of us reading this blog will be all too familiar with protein shakes. But now there are several companies offering shakes that provide everything your body needs. All vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fibre, protein, fats and everything in between. As major Tom said “take your protein pill and put your helmet on” as we explore total food replacement shakes.
We are all told when first going the gym how important nutrition is, especially if you are body building. In fact sorting out a good diet is often more hassle and more expensive than attending the gym. All that shopping and worrying about getting the right mix of each food group. How often have you thought “I wish there was one product I could buy that would have everything I need in it? I know I have. Anyway, now there is.
It has everything your body needs for optimum health who cares what it tastes like
Huel markets itself as nutritional complete food. And upon inspection it looks as though it does have everything in it. Even those things like rare minerals and oils which you only get in nuts and fish. Whats best though it doesn’t have anything thats bad for you. When you are eating meat for example you are always worried about its fat and cholesterol content. With Huel you don’t have to as it doesn’t contain any harmful fats.
You can get everything your body needs in one drink. No need for fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates, protein, fish, eggs, pasta, cottage cheese, tuna and every other healthy food you will have come across if you have ever seriously been a gym goer.
Whats great about it is its convenience. No need to start getting out the rice and pasta and messing about with tins of tuna. Just add 3 scoops to some water mix and drink. We have tried it with milk and we all agree here in the office that it tastes much better with water.
Is it OK for building Muscle?
Right thats probably a primary concern for a lot of readers here. After all thats what gym rats are after. Well yes, for each serving (usually 3 scoops) contains about 30 grams of protein and thats about as much as the body can absorb in one sitting. And it has plenty of carbohydrate, which as we all know is the best calorie provider for body building. Much better than fats.
Each 3 scoop serving of Huel contains about 450 calories so if you were just living off it and nothing else things could get pretty boring. But as a lot of serious body builders can take up to 5000 calories per day this meal replacement shake may not cut it. It can though be a useful addition to the body builders nutritional armoury. You can use it as an add on to your normal body building diet.
OK what do these meal replacement shakes taste like?
Well they don’t really taste like the normal protein shakes because of the fibre thats in them. It probably has the texture of pureed porridge. It contains sucralose the artificial sweetener that most of us are probably used to. And they actually taste OK. Lets get it straight. You wouldn’t walk into a restaurant and ask for an order of Huel. But you can consume it quite easily. Its not unpleasant at all.
Its great for when you are unwell
One of the things I particularly liked about the Huel was how useful it was when I recently went down with some mystery bug. I was feeling totally lousy and had no appetite at all and much less felt liked cooking anything. So Huel came to the rescue. It was easy to make and easy to get down when you are not feeling too good. It has all the nutrients you will ever need to fight any illness and I would say it made me return to optimum health more quickly than if I hadn’t taken it.
Could you live on theses complete meal replacements as your only food?
Yes you could do exactly that if you wanted. In fact you would be far healthier consuming only these shakes rather than traditional food. As we all know body building diets are pretty boring and bland anyway so it wouldn’t be a great leap just to consume Huel or something like it.
I found you can actually consume it for a remarkably long time before you get bored with it. After a while though you do starve craving a juicy steak and fries with a nice side salad. Or something of that kind anyway.
Whats actually in it?
Well here is the actual ingredients lifted from the Huel’s website
- Ultra Fine Oats
- Brown Rice Protein
- Pea Protein
- MCTs from Coconut
- Sunflower Lecithin
- Vitamin & Mineral Blend
- Vanilla Flavour & Sweetener (Not in the Unflavoured & Unsweetened version)
You can actually bake with it
For those that get bored with drinking wet shakes there is another option, You can actually use it to bake with. If you have a bread maker or just like making bread anyway you can easily add some. Huel naturally contains a lot of fibre so it lends itself to baking anyway.
Here is a typical recipe
Green raisin and oat cookies
Makes 635g (about 12 average size cookies)
- 60g green raisins (normal raisins will do)
- 60g shredded coconut
- 100g rolled oats
- 130g Huel (Vanilla works best)
- 100g rolled oats
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 100g of coconut oil ( melted and cooled down)
- 100g rolled oats
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 100g maple syrup (or honey )
- 80ml of almond milk (add enough so the batter is not dry)
- Pinch of salt
Preheat the oven to 170°C / fan 150°C / gas 3.
Line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper.
Mix all the dry ingredients together in a big bowl. Mix the wet ingredients well in a separate bowl.
Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, stirring all the time to form a dough.
Roll the dough into cookie-shaped pieces and place on the baking tray.
Bake in the oven for about 14 minutes or until they look done.
Heres a photo of them which is again lifted from the Huel website. We did try these and everyone in the office thought they were delicious. My 6 year old daughter loved them.
How expensive are these total nutrition shakes. Are they more expensive than a normal meal?
Answer: They are not really expensive at all. In each bag at present there is enough for 28 meals. Each meal being 3 scoops and containing about 450 calories. Each meal costs, at the time of writing this article $2.80 per meal. So if you wanted just one meal per day it would last you 28 days. So not really that expensive.
These complete nutrition shakes are a handy addition to anybodies pantry. It seems Ive been waiting for years for something like this to come along and now they are here. They are convenient, cheap and contain everything the human body needs for complete nutrition. They may not be the most appetising meal you could choose. But they are definitely not unpleasant and I could easily survive on them for a week or two.
I think they really come into their own though when used as a supplement or addition to your normal diet. Or when you are in a hurry and your body needs something quick and healthy. I purchased my first one and used it all and went and bought another one so they must be doing something right. I’m glad they are here. Huel is not the only one on he market and there will probably be more soon so you can choose whichever one is best for you.
